Man dead after falling down elevator shaft

(03/02/10) THE BRONX - A man died Monday night after he fell five stories down an elevator shaft at 1749 Grand Concourse.

The man was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was moving into an apartment within the building, police say.

According to police, the man was moving a mattress into the elevator and backed in without looking. The doors to the elevator opened, but it never arrived.

FDIC shuts down banks in Nevada and Washington

NEW YORK (AP) -- Regulators shut down banks in Nevada and Washington on Friday, marking the 21st and 22nd failures this year of federally insured banks.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of Carson River Community Bank, based in Carson City, Nev. and Rainier Pacific Bank in Tacoma, Wash.
